Instruments
Tabla. A Pair of Drums - Plays the Tala (rhythm).
Tambura - Drone producing 'lute'. Plays the harmony.
Sitar - Improvises the melody based on the rag or scale. Notes are plucked with glissandos and bending strings.
How the Instruments Interact
Oral tradition. The music is not written down. Musicians look and listen. Imitation is common. The drone and improvised melody are based on one of the hundreds of ragas.
