Listening Test - Comparison Questions.
June 2011 Question 5
This comparison question requires quick thinking and writing down the answers as they are heard. Be clear what is being asked of you. The requirements are very specific: Tempo, Melody instruments, Accompaniment instruments and the music played by the accompaniment.
Common problems resulting in lost marks are:
1/ Students getting the Reel (Extract A) and Jig (Extract B) mixed up but still referring to them as Jig and Reel in the comparison question incorrectly.
- Answer - Refer to the music as extract A and extract B.
2/ Students not answering the question.
- Answer - If the question askes about the Tempo you will not get extra marks for giving information about the instruments, dynamics etc
3/ Students rarely gave sufficient points to gain full marks for these questions.
- Answer - Look at the marks awarded and make sure you have made enough points.
TOP TIP...
Use a short connective to help get your comparison point down quickly. Use words like:
whereas, but, however, than.
eg. Extract B is fast but extract A is very fast.
